Mooching for alcohol

I don’t really know what the etiquette is, but is it rude to ask to taste someone’s alcohol? First time at a Christmas party I was offered to taste drinks they brought, so of course as a noob i think this is normal and ask other people around. This didn’t look good apparently. So what would you think of this? Is there an etiquette?
