Review: Hibiki 12 Years Old (Updated 2026)
Suntory’s Hibiki 12 Years Old got its first U.S. release in 2009, and the expression has been on and off the market ever since. In 2015 it vanished completely, replaces by other Hibiki Expressions like Hibiki Harmony, which doesn’t carry an age statement.
In 2026, after an 11 year hiatus, Hibiki 12 Years Old has returned, this time as a global travel retail exclusive. According to parent company Suntory, the whisky has been “reimagined” by Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo. The new blend includes malts from Yamazaki and Hakushu, along with grain whisky from Chita. Components were matured across American oak, Spanish oak, and Mizunara oak casks.
The final product remains the same strength (86 proof) as before. But there’s at least one noteworthy difference. Unlike earlier versions of Hibiki 12, no portions of the new-look blend were aged in umeshu (plum liqueur) casks.
Here’s a look at the new spirit alongside our original (if limited) coverage from 2009.
Hibiki 12 Years Old (2026) Review
This reimagined blend starts off light and floral on the nose, with rose petal, violet, honeysuckle, jasmine tea, grated nutmeg, Mizunara spice, and some barely-there strawberry shortcake. Later on, smaller whiffs of lychee, apple juice, and preserved pear add tart fruit, while touches of almond extract signal the grain whisky. A little vanilla showcases ex-bourbon cask influence, though it’s overall restrained, as is most of the oak; no single component (American, Spanish, or Japanese) punches far above the others.
First sips are moderately bready and grain-forward, accented with cocoa, lemon zest, and more spice. Next come toasted marshmallow and baking spice, alongside vanilla cookie and (subdued) candied ginger. Lychee, baked apple, and pear-flavored hard candy are discernible, though the palate is overall less fruity than the nose. Ginger and cinnamon highlight the midpalate, and cardamom builds from there through to the back palate and finish.
The finish brings the heaviest spice notes, with both Spanish and Mizunara oaks finally getting the chance to strut their stuff. Cardamom segues into delicate smoke and a bit of salted caramel. As per its reputation, Hibiki 12 does everything with a light touch, designed for sipping on a big rock to slowly unlock some of its sweeter and fruitier elements. (The marketing collateral recommends a hand-carved ice ball, but a large freezer cube will have to suffice for most.)

Hibiki 12 Years Old (2009) Review
This is a very easygoing, blended whiskey, pale gold in color and with a light, blonde-wood character that comes through strongly. Freshly brewed tea, a common characteristic in Japanese whiskeys, is huge on the palate, and the spirit eventually fades out with waves of grain, a light astringency, and some flowery notes. Very agreeable — though to be honest it reminds me a lot of 12-year Yamazaki, maybe with a touch more wood to it. CN
