Review: Nooh by La Coste Non-Alcoholic Wines
Nooh is a new wine brand from the Provence winery Château La Coste, all non-alcoholic — or sans alcool, in the French style. Three wines are on offer: a sparkling rose, a sparkling white, and a still rose.
We have a little bit of information about the way these wines are produced:
After years of meticulous research and development, Château La Coste has refined the unique flavors and style that distinguish Nooh by La Coste from other offerings in the non-alcoholic category. Crafted from their renowned Rosé d’une Nuit organic cuvée, Nooh’s still and sparkling offerings maintain a light, refined profile—completely alcohol-free and with just 3.5 grams of residual sugar. The winemaking team employs state-of-the-art vacuum distillation at precisely controlled temperatures to remove alcohol while preserving the wine’s delicate aromatics.
We received the sparkling rose and still rose for review, but not the sparkling white. Thoughts on those two wines follow.
NV Nooh by La Coste Sparkling Rose – This is a bright, clean sparkling rose, featuring some raspberry followed by a touch of orange peel on its wholly approachable body. Moderate to heavily fizzy with surprisingly delicate bubbles, the wine isn’t creamy of foamy but rather quite cleansing and light on its feet. A heavier citrus finish continues the brisk theme and makes for a pleasant denouement. All told, it’s indistinguishable from any number of quality wines with alcool. A / $30
NV Nooh by La Coste Rose – This still rose is quite juicy, plump with notes of lychee and strawberry, edged with orange blossoms and the lights touch of vinegar, working hard to connote wine rather than fruit juice. It’s on the sweet side, with a finish that reaches to lemon curd and tangerines. Fragrant and clean, but hard to distinguish vs. an elevated juice blend. B+ / $25
