Review: Bruto Americano
St. George’s Bruto Americano is a kissing cousin to Campari, bracingly bitter and bright red… and ready for your next Negroni. Against Campari, the California-distilled amaro is a touch more bitter — while also offering piney elements on the nose. This evergreen character becomes more distinct as the spirit opens up in the glass, lending a distinct flavor and aroma to any drink. (Bruto Americano is reportedly inspired by the distiller’s upbringing in California, which makes total sense.)
Blood orange notes — both fruit and peel — are present but more elusive, a bit buried beneath the bracing bitterness. Those bitter bark notes linger well into the finish, where hints of dark chocolate and more of a menthol note linger. Solid as a Campari substitute in cocktails, but it also drinks beautifully alone.
48 proof.
