Review: Rhum Barbancourt Haitian Proof
“Haitian proof’” for this white rum from Barbancourt is 110, a healthy abv for this product made from pressed cane juice and bottled without aging and filtering, which is similar for (similar) agricole-style rums.
Rhum Barbancourt Haitian Proof Review
While this is intended largely as a cocktail ingredient, the rum is surprisingly agreeable, even served solo and at full strength. The nose has a gentle hogo note but is otherwise dominated by overripe pineapple and coconut cream, becoming increasingly prominent as it sits in glass. Air time helps notes of green banana and a lightly grassy quality — much less present than in agricole, thanks to the high proof — come into focus.
The palate offers similar qualities, banana a bit more clearly evident, with a lemongrass note following behind. The body is a bit more obviously cane-based than the nose suggests, with overt sweetness and a couple of extra upticks of green grass opening the door to some more clearly pastoral qualities. The finish sees lingering sugar, with cinnamon a distant echo. The fade-out is clean but enduringly sweet, with hints of butterscotch.
This is solid stuff and, given the abv, quite versatile, too. For the price (usually under $20), it’s one of the best white rums you’re likely to find, in any style of production.
110 proof.
