Review: Patron 100 Silver Tequila

Unlike a lot of recently released tequilas, this new expression from Patron doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel. It’s a 100 proof version of its classic blanco, made using the same 100% agave, 100% tahona production techniques, and bottled in a traditional Patron decanter. No additives, just a higher abv — and, intriguingly, it is distilled to proof, with no dilution after the fact.

If you like Patron at 80 proof I expect you’ll like it just as much at 100 proof, though as with the original Patron, this remains a simple, straightforward expression. Lime leads the way on the nose, and, enhanced by the added alcohol, it’s even more prominent than in standard Patron. Peppery and quite yeasty, time in glass helps the tequila to build out a bready character, though always quite racy with a big citrus edge.

The palate fires up with some heat, with lime leaf again very prominent. This serves to temper some of the more agave-forward elements of traditional Patron, but only just so. The experience turns green and a bit vegetal after the citrus notes die down. From there, a tenacious white pepper character builds, adding spice to a thick layer of roasted agave notes, quite woody and increasingly earthy as the finish approaches.

The extra alcohol gives this blanco a dimension that 80-proof Patron seems to lack, if only slightly; the heavy lime character makes it perfect for more aggressive margaritas and Mexican martinis.
