Review: NV Ferreira Porto Dona Antonia Reserva Tawny

While Tawny Port is known for its nutty, caramelized flavors, this expression from Ferreira’s Dona Antonia label defies expectations, perhaps owing to a relatively brief aging cycle.

Edged with traditional raisin notes, the Port surprises by showcasing some notable strawberry and blueberry elements, fading from there into milk chocolate and, eventually, a tea leaf character that fits more closely with the Tawny style. Things turn quite sweet and syrupy as the finish builds, evoking caramel and molasses flavors that had me thinking about Milk Duds candies. Vanilla lingers on the soothing conclusion — again, very sweet.

While not quite what I was expecting, it’s still a lively Port, especially at this price. I’d pair it with blue cheese to help counterbalance some of the sweeter notes.

B+ / $22
