Review: Portofino Dry Gin

Made in Italy and distilled in a traditional copper pot still, Portofino boasts 21 botanicals, and although the full list remains secret, the bottle and their website mention juniper, lemon, lavender, rosemary, marjoram, sage, iris, and rose.

Poured into a glass, the gin offers a very aromatic nose that includes perfumed notes of rose that join nicely with piney juniper, lemon, and lavender. There is also an interesting herbal note on the nose that may result from the inclusion of rosemary and sage, and a bit of racy alcohol also comes through on the gin. The palate follows the nose, but the flavors are in a slightly different balance. Taking a sip, piney, peppery notes of the juniper now come to the fore and merge with lemon peel, lavender, and an herbal character. The gin’s range of flavors really play together nicely, creating a rounded character, and the finish is a particular strength as the complex lingers for quite some time before gently fading.

This is a delightful gin that started strong and got better as I sat with the glass for a spell. It also makes for a refreshing yet sophisticated gin & tonic. I’m a fan.

86 proof.
