Review: 2023 Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc Dillons Point and 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Wairau Reserve
Marlborough, New Zealand’s Saint Clair Family Estates offer an array of varietals from which to choose, but their foundation of focus rests on Sauvignon Blanc, although their Pinot Gris is one to try if you fancy. Today, we’re taking a closer look at two of their single-vineyard selections recently made available. Let’s give them a try.
2023 Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc Dillons Point Review
Very tropical, with grapefruit zest and pineapple up front, eventually shifting into notes of lemon zest. On the palate, notes of lemongrass and hibiscus emerge before white flowers provide a nice landing on a mildly dry finish. It’s far from the most complex Sauvignon Blanc I’ve ever tried, but no one’s attempting to unravel the complexities of a white wine while sitting poolside holding a mildly chilled glass in the middle of summer, exactly the scenario for which this is built. B+ / $24
2023 Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc Wairau Reserve Review
Heavy with green pepper and black currant aromas, and one of the most pungent Sauvignon Blancs I’ve experienced in quite some time. Medium-bodied on the palate with unfolding layers of guava, grapefruit, and herbs with some minerality towards the finish. The herbs stick around on a lingering finish, accompanied by a gradually increasing note of salinity. Pairing this with asparagus and chicken off the grill allows this to highlight its versatility. Remember what I said in the previous tasting note regarding complexity? If you want it, here it is, come and get it. B+ / $40
