Review: WhistlePig Dank & Dry Old Fashioned Cocktail

How many firsts can we jam into one product? For WhistlePig, its Dank & Dry Old Fashioned is its first:

non-alcoholic offering (outside of the syrup it sometimes sells)
ready-to-drink cocktail
product with cannabis terpenes in the recipe

Designed with Dry January — er, Dank January — in mind, it’s a true oddity that we just had to try, made with an alcohol-removed version of WhistlePig’s 100% rye, its own barrel-aged maple syrup, and “old fashioned cannabis terpenes.” 100% of the proceeds of this Dank January Limited Edition will benefit Turning Tables, a New Orleans based non-profit which serves minorities in the local hospitality community.

The nose is certainly dank as promised, though the terpene notes aren’t overpowering and some sweetness helps to temper things. Any sense of whiskeyness plays third fiddle on this one. On the palate, the terpenes take more of a focus, though again they are tempered by a moderate sweetness that’s more brown sugar than maple syrup. A hint of lemon peel evokes brewed sweet tea, though the finish reveals itself as all-terpene, all the time, an intensely weedy note that can only make you wonder: Why am I not high right now?

Weird and indescribable as far as old fashioneds go — it will undoubtedly be a “love it or hate it” situation for most who manage to encounter it. Smoke it with WhistlePig’s own snout-shaped cocktail smoker if you want to get really crazy… and yet still not at all impacted psychoactively.
