Review: Dewar’s Double Double Aged 37 Years Old

Dewar’s Double Double Aged has long been the pinnacle of its collection, with three expressions variously aged 21, 27, and 32 years old. Now Dewar’s is upping the ante once again with the launch of Dewar’s Double Double 37 Years Old, a collection of single malts each aged independently for 37 years before finishing in oloroso sherry casks from Aultmore and blending by five-time Master Blender of the Year Stephanie Macleod. Accompanying the whisky is a Baccarat crystal tumbler set from which to enjoy the spirit.

What an unusual and expressive whisky this is — particularly from Dewar’s. The nose is rich and malty, almost chocolatey at times, featuring rich notes of walnuts, coffee, and notes of black and green tea. There’s a punch of citrus in the mix, driven by the sherry finishing, On first sips, it’s very, very fruity on the palate. Notes of red apples, strawberries — I don’t think I’ve ever had a Scotch whisky quite like it, touched with plenty of baking spice — all very fall friendly. The redder fruit notes fade with some time in glass (get in their fast) toward more of a nectarine note, then groove toward notes of tea leaf and, on the finish, a slight anise-driven quality, barely hinting at the bottom of a bitter glass of Fernet.

I loved it, and my small sample was gone far too quickly. Mind that the price is for a half bottle… but you do get two fancy glasses for your investment. Those, as they say, are forever.
