Alcohol in the US

I plan to study at an American university, but I have a question that haunts me hard. Is it really illegal to drink alcohol when you are 18(like under 21 years old …)or I don’t understand something.. I have been waiting for being 18 years old a long period of time and now I dunno what to do…
