Tonic Water + Mead!
Okay, so I know this sounds insane, but before you crucify me for heresy, hear me out: l brought my homemade ‘blueberry blackberry lavender’ & ‘raspberry lemon hibiscus’ mead to my parents house to show it off. The mead ranked in at 18% ABV & is absolutely delicious, but my mother opted to water it down as the high alcohol content was too much for her.
We were making Gin & tonics at the same time & my mom kept insisting I mixed my mead into it to cut down the intensity of the alcohol. Initially I rejected the idea, thinking this was borderline heretical & a horrible idea, but eventually after a few drinks I was loosened up & said “screw it” & made a 50/50 mix of tonic water & mead with some ice.
To my abject astonishment the tonic water masked the flavor of the alcohol while bringing out & accentuating the more subtle floral & fruity notes of the mead. It was honestly delicious, I’m in shock. Everyone in my family agreed it was really good. Recommend fellow mead makers give this a shot. I think we discovered something really cool. Turns a strong dry mead (which I enjoy) into a lovely sort of seltzer, with the quinine carrying the flavors that are usually disrupted by the alcohol. Maybe we’re crazy… give it a try!
