Review: Bombay Sapphire Murcian Lemon Gin

Bombay Sapphire’s special edition releases continue with Premier Cru Murcian Lemon, which is infused with Fino lemons from Murcia, Spain alongside additional mandarin and navel oranges to brighten up the citrus quality of the spirit.

Unlike some of Bombay’s other special releases, such as East, the impact of the additional citrus here is notable and impactful. The nose is instantly lemony without coming across as candylike in the slightest, taking the shape of lime leaf at times, with distinct mandarin aromas visible. While lightly earthy the way any good gin should be, juniper takes a clear back seat while the fruit does more of the heavy lifting.

I’ve similar opinions about the palate, which is equally exuberant and fruit-driven, giving room for piney juniper to shine alongside ample lemon and orange notes. Hints of grapefruit and a grind of white pepper add more of a spice element to the proceedings, while a gentle sweetness gives the gin a bit more approachability. Lemonade vibes, for sure, and the rumbling earthiness visible on the nose never really materializes here, leaving you with a palate that’s fully clean and slightly green.

Fans of more citrus-driven Plymouth should check this out — as should everyone really. It works marvels in all types of cocktails, but Bombay positions it as a perfect ingredient in a French 75.

94 proof.
