Review: 2025 Mezzacorona Dinotte Red Blend
Mezzacorona’s Ventessa lineup already made its case for Trentino as a place worth considering when looking for a proper budget wine buy, so Dinotte was presumably christened for mood rather than any darkness in the glass or otherwise.
The premise remains rooted in Alpine traditions: Teroldego and Marzemino are harvested off hillside vineyards in the granite-heavy Dolomites, with the altitude performing labor usually attributed to the winemaker rather than the mountain. Then, for a bit of complexity, a bit of Merlot is thrown into the mix. Cool nights at that elevation produce brightness in the bottle, one of those claims in the wine trade that sounds like a sales pitch until the glass proves it isn’t. What shows up are aromas of blackberry and red currant, tempered by French oak. There’s a savory streak running through the palate, with pencil lead and granite supporting the darker fruit. Touches of anise, clove and nutmeg cut through on the finish as the fruit recedes. It pairs quite well with a quality piece of dark chocolate or a small charcuterie board, but can also stand firmly on its own.
