Review: Old Soul Tintype Series #3 Bourbon
Old Soul bourbon comes from the Cathead Distillery in Jackson, Mississippi, but the whiskey in the Tintype series is sourced entirely from Indiana. It is then sent to Mississippi where it is aged. Today we are trying the third in the Tintype Series. I had a chance to try the previous two installments, and they were serious bourbons showcasing depth and complexity at cask strength.
The Tintype Series showcases blues artists, and each entry includes a distinctive tintype image of a notable musician on the front of the bottle. Tintype #1 presented an image of Captain Luke Mayer. Tintype #2 had Hermon Hitson. Tintype #3 has a really cool picture of blues slide guitarist Kenny Brown.
The whiskey in all of the Tintype bourbons has the same source and location for aging, but they are otherwise quite different from one another, with different mash bills and different age statements. The one we are trying today is 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley, and it was aged for 11 years. That’s a lot of rye and a lengthy period of time in Mississippi’s hot humid weather, which should have encouraged vigorous interaction with the cask. Let’s pour a glass and give it a try.
Old Soul Tintype Series #3 Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review
Right out of the gate, this is an enticing whiskey offering a lovely and complex nose that showcases aromas of chewy caramel, maple syrup, vanilla, butterscotch pudding, crème brûlée, and a bit of leather. It might sound overly sweet, however the notes don’t jumble together but rather take turns coming to the fore, with wood tannins joining in to offer a counterbalance.
On the palate, the bourbon follows the nose beautifully. Each of the notes come through with clarity and then plays together nicely with the other flavors. Bold caramel melts into butterscotch pudding then becomes maple syrup and finally transforms into the burnt sugar on crème brûlée as soft leather sits in the background. The alcohol provides a bit of a bite, but it isn’t overwhelming as the flavors flit back and forth, creating a complex character, finally leading into a long, gentle finish as the flavors evaporate. I was really quite taken with this bourbon. I enjoyed both of the previous tintype whiskeys, but this is my favorite of the three.
103.5 proof.
