A hangover I will never forget
I’m starting this off by saying that, as an adult, I’ve never been much of a drinker. I occasionally drink when the opportunity arises or on special occasions. One night, my boyfriend (21M) and I (24F) went to our favorite bar for some fancy cocktails. I ordered a cocktail with a smoky, aromatic scent, but it also had a strange, almost gas-like smell. I didn’t think much of it at the time because the bar was known for its aromatic drinks. I also had another cocktail, but that part isn’t particularly relevant. We shared our drinks and food, and I had a shot of whiskey before going to bed. My boyfriend, who has a higher alcohol tolerance than I do, was disappointed that I wanted to go to sleep shortly after we arrived at our hotel, but he eventually went to bed too. Then the nightmare began. It was around 3 a.m. when I woke up feeling as though my face had been run over by a semi-truck. My gums felt as though they had been sliced by tiny knives, even though I had brushed my teeth before going to sleep. I could feel the pain before I was even fully awake, and going back to sleep was impossible. I thought maybe taking a bath would help soothe the pain, but my sinuses felt inflamed, and my entire head was pounding. My gums still felt as though they had been scratched all over, even though they looked completely normal. This was when I started to panic. Despite having a relatively high pain tolerance and being accustomed to bad hangovers, I had never experienced anything like this. Everything felt so severe, and then I started vomiting. The pain didn’t go away after I threw up; in fact, it seemed to get worse. I started crying because the pain was so unbearable. We were staying near a hospital, and after thinking it over, I decided it was too much to handle and that we needed to walk there. I was also becoming increasingly concerned because it felt harder and harder to breathe. The strange part is that, a few minutes into the walk, my symptoms started to disappear. I began feeling much better and even felt embarrassed about how I had reacted earlier. Since I was feeling significantly better and it was so late, I decided we should return to the hotel instead of continuing to the hospital. I wonder whether the cold air helped, but I still can’t help wondering what the hell happened to me? I’ve never experienced such a severe reaction, especially after what seemed like a relatively small amount of alcohol which was two cocktails and one shot. It’s been a year since the incident, and I’ve had alcohol a few times since then, never exceeding one or two cocktails. Thankfully, I’ve never experienced anything like that again. I’m wondering whether there’s any possibility that I was poisoned or had an allergic reaction to something in the drinks. Has anyone experienced anything similar, or does anyone have any idea what might have caused this?
