how does alcohol affect you? and is my experience weird?

I’m new to alcohol and so far have found myself kind of disappointed with the effects.

I was celebrating with family recently and was offered a few different alcoholic beverage: hard seltzer, tequila shot, champagne, and some shot called a “Kiss of Peru” that I don’t know what was in it (mostly tasted like orange juice). I didn’t particularly like the taste of any of them except the last one, but I’m assuming that’s something that can change with time.

After finishing one drink/shot, I found myself getting really tired and sluggish and just kind of irritated, like I was suddenly filled with sand. It might be exacerbated by medication I’m taking, but I don’t know to what degree. When I’d mention it to people they’d just say the solution was drinking more, but I’ve heard conflicting opinions on that.

So… how is alcohol supposed to feel? How does the feeling change/progress between how much you drink? Was my experience an outlier or standard? What the heck is a buzz vs tipsy vs drunk?

I don’t want to drink again to learn for myself since I found the experience pretty unpleasant, but I am fascinated by the concept and differences between people. No judgement or anything toward anyone who drinks or doesn’t, I’d like to understand.
