Review: Boplaas 1880 Single Grain Whisky 6 Years Old Tawny Port Cask Finish

Based in the town of Calitzdorp in the Western Cape of South Africa, the Boplaas Family Vineyards is a sixth-generation estate with distilling history stretching as far back as 1880. They are best known for producing Port-style wines and award-winning pot still brandies, but have recently made waves in the South African whisky scene, and have collected a couple of international awards across their range.

This 6 year old single grain is produced from local yellow maize and matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and tawny Port casks. Bottled at 43% abv and sitting within the medium-bodied, easy-drinking camp, this expression is one of six in the 1880 range of grain and malt whiskies, each matured in different casks and at varying ages. The area’s hot/dry summers, cold winters, and relatively low humidity encourage an almost rapid style of maturation. The tradeoff is a generous angels’ share, but a surprisingly flavorful spirit bottled at a comparatively young age.

The first impression is inviting. The nose opens with fruit cake, dried figs, apricot, and a gentle mix of winter spices. There is a great balance of oak to spirit balance on the nose, which I feel is important: Port-finished whiskies can often feel a little cask-heavy. Here, the tawny influence is beautifully integrated. The ex-bourbon maturation provides a classic vanilla and oak foundation, while the port finish adds dried fruit and a rounded sweetness without completely overwhelming the grain spirit.

On the palate, this whisky is well-rounded and pleasantly chewy. Bright orchard fruit, floral notes, and spices lead the way. The spirit is a little aggressive, but certainly isn’t thin – I feel the abv of 43% was a wise choice here. The finish is medium in length with lingering oak spice, toffee warmth, and gentle sweetness. It’s not an incredibly complex whisky, but it’s satisfying and coherent. There’s enough happening here to make it interesting, and again, the lower abv keeps it approachable and perfect for casual sipping.

Overall, this is a great whisky to display the Boplaas house style, appealing to drinkers who enjoy bourbon, Irish whiskey, or Scotch styles. This bottling is a useful reminder than single grain whisky isn’t always bland – the spirit itself is relatively quiet, but the maturation has given it plenty personality.
