Review: Sauvy B by Joel Gott Wine Spritzers
We are pleased to report another winery has entered the fray to rescue wine from the ready-to-drink wilderness: a lawless, inflamed expanse where vodka mascots, venture capitalists, and seltzer bros have been quietly eating wine’s lunch for years while wine sat there, uncanned, slowly withering an analog death. Enter Joel and Sarah Gott, who surveyed the entire farm-to-canned-cocktail-industrial complex and thought: what if instead of vodka, jalapeños and shame, we canned Sauvignon Blanc and gave it a personality upgrade? The result is Sauvy B, a spritzer which takes their actual wine (two guesses which varietal), dilutes it with natural citrus flavor, hits it with sparkling water, and seasons the whole situation with electrolytes via Himalayan pink salt, presumably mined by yaks under a full moon and blessed by a wellness influencer before it touches the can.
It’s not so much a beverage as a mood board: aspirational and engineered for people who own a cooler bag than yours, presumably with someone’s monogram on it. I could be wrong, but I’m not sure if anyone asked for electrolytes or Himalayan pink salt in their spritzer. But the blessed free market provides, whether or not you were thirsty for pink Himalayan salted anything, and here we all are, cracking a few open anyway.
Sauvy B by Joel Gott Lime – The intended flavor here is on point, without the chemical or excessive artificial sweetener notes usually lurking about with drinks of this sort. It does exactly as advertised with a burst of lime that is relentless throughout. The actual Sauvy doesn’t really appear until the finish, but none of this matters much, because the thing is dangerously easy to drink, the kind of easy that can empty a four-pack in a day if you’re not careful. Serve it up with graham crackers or butter cookies for a proper dessert session, helping to take the sweet edge off ever so slightly. I was prepared to be a hater, but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A-
Sauvy B by Joel Gott Grapefruit – Much like the lime, this is full grapefruit for the entire runtime, and the Sauvy makes a brief cameo. Unlike the lime, the Himalayan pink salt overstays its welcome in the best way, lingering on the back end after everyone else has gone home. If you’re drinking from the can, a few swirls around helps things a bit, and if you’re drinking from a glass, an ice cube or two isn’t out of the question. Either way, it’s still very drinkable and makes one respect the Gott’s instinct to season a spritzer with rock salt from a mountain range and somehow get it right. B+
