Review: NV Sandeman Apitiv Reserve White Port

In the U.S., white Port continues to grow in popularity — albeit haltingly — with options like Sandeman‘s Apitiv Reserve increasingly available. Made from white grape varietals including (in this case) Malvasia Fina, Códega, Viosinho, Rabigato, Arinto, and Gouveio, white Port is just as sweet as ruby or tawny varieties, but its flavor profile is completely different and much more summery.

Slightly darker in color than the typical white Port, this kicks off with ample sweetness that evokes peaches and pears, both fresh and tinned versions. A floral character adds a light astringency, featuring notes of rose petals and orange flowers. As the wine develops in glass, the fruit notes take on a more caramelized note, weaving into a flambeed banana character, pairing well with lingering tropical overtones. More intense than your typical white Port — just as the color would suggest — it’s a fine option for a refreshing white Port and tonic, or as an aperitif on its own.
