Review: 2019 Livio Felluga Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali Sigar DOC
Note up front that this bottling of friulano is a distinctly different wine than the standard Friulano from Livio Felluga, based in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia area in northern Italy. Sigar was “a farmer nicknamed for his love of smoking [who] placed his hopes in the sky as he tended to the harvest of vines planted in 1963.”
While Sigar is technically a dry white, the wine is characterized by heavy aromas of white flowers, backed by racy spice notes in the form of white pepper, underripe quince, and more than a little camphor. Sweetness is connoted via a strong peach and melon note character, but the combination comes across as a little underripe, perhaps already fading a bit due to extended time in bottle. More of that camphor — gossamer and threadlike — lingers on the finish.
Interesting stuff — particularly as an aperitif — but I’d drink this immediately, as I fear it will fade into a balsamic funk if given too much more time to develop.
