Review: Bardstown Bourbon Co. Distillery Reserve Mars Single Malt Japanese Blend
Bardstown Bourbon Co. has proven to be one of the more consistent producers of creative, cutting-edge American whiskeys. Nowhere in their generous portfolio is that more evident than the limited-edition Distillery Reserve Series, a thrice annual showcase of some the distillery’s boldest creations available exclusively at their Kentucky outposts and to members of their whiskey club, The Reserve.
Earlier this year, when I reviewed Cascadia, the first Distillery Reserve release for 2026 finished in unique and rare Garryana oak, I called that whiskey the most unique in the series. But that claim hasn’t lasted long. In a first if its kind partnership, BBCo. teamed up with Japanese distillery Mars to blend two mature Kentucky bourbons with two unique Japanese single malts, one aged in Umeshu plum liqueur and the other aged in rare Sakura wood. A simple blend of those four whiskeys would be remarkable enough, but that apparently wasn’t good enough. In a revolutionary approach to whiskey-making, all four whiskeys shared the same barrel for a full year, producing what Bardstown Bourbon Co. calls “a unified whiskey shaped by integration.” With that, let’s boldly go where my whiskey palate has apparently never gone before.
Bardstown Bourbon Co. Distillery Reserve Mars Single Malt Japanese Blend Review
Less than 25% of this blend is Japanese single malt, but the aroma delivers an immediately recognizable malt character that presents as toasted grains drizzled with raw honey, reminiscent of the best breakfast cereals. Fresh peach and nectarine notes add a high tone complexity and build with a caramel-coated sweetness as things open in the glass. A darker note of cherry jam eventually replace those fresher stone fruits, settling into a satisfying bouquet of warm cherry pastry fresh from the oven.
The flavors are equally fruity, beginning with candied notes of peach rings and dried apricots that would be a touch cloying if not for an impressively creamy texture that seems to spread that sweetness to every possibly crevice of the palate. A sturdy foundation of silky baking spice and Demerara sugar adds richness and complexity. The midpalate tempers some of that generous sweetness with less saccharine, gently tart notes of damson plums and exotic oak spice: ginger, sandalwood and a hint of eucalyptus. The finish goes on forever with warming pink peppercorns, vanilla buttercream, cinnamon syrup, and cocktail cherry. I’ve tasted other Japan-meets-Kentucky offerings (Legent, etc.) but nothing quite like this. The balance between the oak-driven well-aged bourbons and the elegant and nuanced Japanese whiskies is striking. And delicious. My favorite release yet from this series and a strong contender for our best whiskeys of the year list.
