Shot etiquette

when you buy shots for a group do you cater to their preferred liquor? i had a friend buy a round of shots for me and the rest of our friends, but they got tequila shots and he knew damn well i didnt like tequila lol. i ended up giving the shot to someone else cause i couldnt take it and i felt bad. our friend group ranges from 21 to 23 so we are all fairly “new” to drinking and wanted to know how others would go about this situation.
