Review: Longbottom & Co. Virgin Mary Tomato Juice
Canned/bottled Bloody Mary mixes are ubiquitous, with options both upmarket and inexpensive widely available. A UK-based entrant, Longbottom & Co., just entered the U.S. market with a distinct focus on the former, a premium product available in single-serve cans.
Longbottom’s Virgin Mary — consumable directly from the can without added alcohol, I can attest — is billed as a “clean” alternative to mass-produced products, made from “the world’s best tomatoes” and including “no unpronounceable ingredients” or GMOs. The vegan-certified product comes in 7.5 oz cans with 44 calories each.
Longbottom & Co. Virgin Mary Tomato Juice Review
It’s a delightful mixer, more of a pasta sauce orange in color than the bright red hue you often find in these products, and loaded with plenty of flavor. The tomato flavor is actually fairly mild but wholly enjoyable, with additions making perfect sense. Worchester sauce and horseradish notes are restrained but easy to pick out. From there, things get a little more nuanced, though the finish has a kick of lemon, and there’s ample brine throughout. Black pepper notes are mild, and while there’s some heat to the beverage (Scotch bonnets are in the ingredient list), it hits the tongue with a very approachable, low-level heat. I had no trouble polishing off a full can in just a few minutes, and actually found the concoction quite refreshing — a rarity in the world of Bloody Mary mixes.
The good news: Longbottom says that 11 airlines are serving the product onboard flights, so give the menu a closer look the next time you’re in flight.
