What can I expect from straight vermouth on the rocks?

Picked up martini and Rossi vermouth (generic) today and was curious if it is palatable directly on the rocks. Anyone have any experience? Emphasis on picked up today, as I hear unrefridgerated vermouth goes toast pretty quick.
