Review: Beaulieu Vineyard 2020 Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon and 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
A return appearance of Beaulieu Vineyard on this site should not come as a surprise, given our track record of reviewing and enjoying the Rutherford-based vineyard’s diverse range of wines. Today we have the opportunity to try bottles from both ends of the price range: the debut of an accessible and affordable Sauvignon Blanc, and its most coveted, classic Cabernet Sauvignon.
2020 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon – Beaulieu’s marquee Cabernet is intense on the nose as ever, with aromas of ripe dark fruit, rose petals, and violets on the initial approach. Over time notes of black cherry, orange zest, and a touch of mint appear, delivering a promise for more complexity throughout. The dark fruit does not let up on the palate but is surrounded by rich notes of vanilla, baking spice, and dark chocolate, with a touch of tobacco leaf towards the end. Chewy tannins and balanced acidity provide structure and excellent mouthfeel as the lingering finish brings a touch of minerality to the forefront as the fruit fades. It is strongly advised to hold this for, at minimum, another three to four years. But if waiting that long isn’t an option, decanting or about an hour of air (my course of action) is strongly advised before drinking. Either way, it is another beautiful bottle putting the complexity and charms of Rutherford Cabernets on full display. A / $160
2023 Beaulieu Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley – An inaugural and unexpected but welcome release, with brisk peach and Meyer lemon leading to softer notes of white flowers and a gentle dusting of baking spice. Big, ripe citrus notes keep this from falling into the ammonia traps that can be present in certain Sauvignon Blancs, and well-balanced acidity delivers a crisp, lingering finish with a subtle touch of oak. It pairs perfectly with a dinner of smoked salmon or goat cheese salad, but most certainly stands alone in its credentials as an impressive first showing and a nice bellwether for future vintages. A-/ $40
