Review: Flecha Azul Tequila Anejo

Flecha Azul is a new tequila brand, coming out the gate with five expressions covering the gamut of modern tequila styles. We received but one for tasting, an anejo aged in American oak for 18 months, built from agaves harvested after 6 to 8 years, open-air fermented, and steam-cooked in masonry ovens before being distilled in a copper pot.

The nose here is bold and pungent, laden with ample agave, more peppery than herbal or grassy, with clear notes of green jalapeno. The indications of the barrel aren’t particularly evident at first blush, though a gentle vein of caramel can be detected in the background. The palate continues the theme with plenty of peppery punch, coming across as a little boozy, though the more blatant agave notes are counterbalanced by a mild overlay of vanilla and, especially, butterscotch. A dusting of cinnamon on the finish evokes a fiery Mexican chocolate, but there’s no mistaking that this is an agave show from start to finish, with the barrel a seeming afterthought. Plan accordingly.

80 proof. NOM 1110.
