Review: 2022 Rombauer Chardonnay Carneros

Now that Rombauer is ensconced in the Gallo empire, what changes await its flagship wine: Chardonnay, harvested in Carneros?

Well, it’s every bit as unctuous as you remember, kicking things off with bold notes of coconut and vanilla, to the point where you might feel like dessert is being served. The good news is part of the secret of Rombauer’s success, as there’s plenty of fruit in the form of lemon curd, orange blossoms, and some grapefruit peel to balance out the sweeter elements in the wine. The finish comes dangerously close to being something you might describe as balanced, if you were being charitable, with a taste of kiwi and quince amidst the creme brulee awaiting you on the fade-out.
