Review: Tres Generaciones Anejo Tequila – 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition

Tres Generaciones upgrades its Anejo expression with this third bottle in its Legacy Edition series of tequilas. This 50th Anniversary Añejo “is a unique expression paying homage to Don Francisco Javier Sauza’s original recipe, which he crafted 50 years ago to create a tequila masterpiece celebrating three generations of distilling at La Perseverancia distillery.”

This is our second Legacy Edition bottling, following up on the La Colonial Reposado expression we reviewed in late 2022. It’s a different liquid than the standard anejo, featuring 100% Blue Weber Agave roasted in masonry ovens, tahona crushed, double distilled in copper pot stills, and aged fourteen months in seven-year-old American white oak barrels. “These barrels are specially selected and treated with an in-house charring process to enhance the essence and craftmanship of this rare release.” It’s also released at 45% abv instead of the usual 40%.

As well, the striking, green ceramic bottle — inspired by the Dons’ original 1973 decanter — is alone worth the price of admission.

Tres Generaciones has never been a shy tequila, and this anejo is no exception to the rule: Vibrant notes of herbal agave, infused with lemon peel and white pepper, are immediate, chased by a light note of sweet maple and a hint of blueberry compote. It’s equally racy on the palate at first, but some sweeter notes come into focus fairly quickly — more maple and a strong thread of vanilla and caramel, classic anejo flavors that pair nicely as a foil against the persistent notes of greenery and spice. Warming with an enduring, spicy finish, the conclusion offers echoes of roasted agave, barrel char, and a touch of chocolate. It’s quite a journey from start to finish — bracing the entire way thanks to the higher proof — but never in want of joy.

90 proof. NOM 1102.
