Review: Attems 2021 Ribolla Gialla and 2022 Sauvignon Blanc

Attems is a winery in Italy’s Friuli-Venezia region with a particular focus on white wines, plus the occasional rose. Today we look at a pair of recently released whites, both from the 2021 vintage.

2021 Attems Ribolla Gialla IGT – The lightly oxidized quality of this indigenous grape makes for a wine with lots of perfumed florals alongside a crisp honeydew character. A slight salinity plays well with the melon character, evoking an antipasto character — which sounds like a delightful pairing for this wine. (Seafood, too.) Enduring notes of white blossoms on the finish evoke springtime and fresh linens. A- / $19

2022 Attems Sauvignon Blanc IGT – A sauvignon blanc unlike what you’re probably familiar with, this lovely wine is rich with notes of melon and lemon custard, gently sweet but never blown out, evoking notes of coconut cream layered with vanilla. Ever so slightly perfumed on the finish, these floral elements complement a well-rounded experience that tips its hat at orange blossoms on the fade-out. A / $24
