Review: Wines of Avaline (2024)

A partnership between actress Cameron Diaz and entrepreneur Katherine Power, Avaline is a wine brand positioning itself as a clean, transparent option offering a full range of wines including white wines and rosé, most of which are being re-reviewed here with their slightly updated branding. Throughout their website and marketing campaign, Avaline emphasizes organic farming practices, production methods that are vegan-friendly, and minimal intervention in the winemaking process.

NV Avaline White Blend (2024) – A wine produced by Don Miguel winery, located in the Penedes region of Spain; a blend of 40% Xarel-lo, 30% Parellada, 20% White Grenache, and 10% Macabeo. This is a light, expressive wine offering notes of lemon zest, peach blossom and stone fruit on top with layers of green apple, white flowers, and a gentle touch of salination underneath. There’s plenty to love here but the floral influence and salination takes things in a surprise, and welcome, direction. A- / $24 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]

NV Avaline Sparkling Rosé (2024) – A new, limited-edition offering for 2024, this sparkling rose is made with Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Grenache grapes. Pouring this wine reveals ripe raspberry notes bursting in the glass, with a touch of citrus as things settle. Some strawberry and salinity peek through as well. On the palate, the raspberry arrives first with strawberry following suit, and its sweetness doesn’t really allow for anything else to cut through on the palate. Good acidity, and there’s a short finish as the red fruits fade and some salinity and lemon zest linger. Not the most complex of Avaline’s offerings, but would work exceptionally well served chilled in the hottest months of the year. B+ / $35

NV Avaline Rosé (2024) – Produced and harvested in Bordeaux by EthicDrinks, this blend of 25% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 30% Cinsault, and 20% Caladoc presents aromatics of white flowers, apricot, and a blast of strawberry. The strawberry dominates on the palate before pivoting to layers of nectarine, cherry, and a touch of pepper structured by generous, bright acidity. Very light and fresh, it would work well as a kick-off to a summer brunch on the patio. B / $24 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
