what are the differences betweem scotch and bourbon

i really like whisky but ive only tried scotch, and i wonder what bourbon tastes like, my dad says he doesnt like it so thats why i am a bit unsure about buying a bottle to try some

Ive heard its sweet, ive tried black rum (Kraken) and i wonder if it is as sweet as that
