Review: Dos Primos Tequila Reposado and Anejo
Dos Primos‘ blanco tequila was a hit with us back in 2021, enough so that it landed a spot on our top tequilas of the year list. While a reposado followed soon after, it somehow got lost on the shelf here and was uncovered only when the follow-up anejo recently arrived.
Today we look at both older expressions, both made from estate-grown, Highlands agave.
Both are 80 proof. NOM 1603.
Dos Primos Tequila Reposado – Aged 6 months, presumably in bourbon barrels. Plenty of bold agave still on display, peppery and heavy with herbs; quite green on the nose, but softened up with some caramel and vanilla, and a little lemon to follow. Quite similar on the palate: lemon peel, rosemary and thyme, then a lingering, cake frosting sweetness. If you like your reposados veering closer to blancos, this is a great bet. Conversely, if you like your blancos veering closer to reposado, give Dos Primos’ unaged expression a go. A- / $44 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
Dos Primos Tequila Anejo – Aged 13 months. Considerably darker in color. While the Reposado and Blanco expressions have a lot of DNA crossover, this anejo really flips the script. Considerably sweeter on the nose, those light notes of caramel and vanilla come across here light syrup-drenched French toast with bruleed bananas. The agave and pepper notes are still evident, but much less prominent. While the nose telegraphs sweetness, the palate’s got far more to show, offering the essence of a boldly syruped Sunday morning pancake platter, candied oranges, and cinnamon. The agave’s still present, but it doesn’t meld as fully with the sweet proceedings, leaving things a bit out of balance. I definitely preferred the more agave-driven younger expressions. B / $55
