Review: Espanita Tequila Reposado Double Barrel

We recently tried Espanita’s core lineup of tequilas, which are made with 100% blue agave from the Jalisco Highlands. Today we are trying their limited release Reposado Double Barrel, which was rested in American oak before being finished in a second set of fresh, first-fill ex-bourbon barrels for up to four extra months. Let’s give it a try.

The nose shows lovely herbal agave notes and lightly sweet green pepper, followed by light vanilla. The palate starts off with that gently sweet vanilla, then rich, roasted agave notes follow along with a big peppery bite. Quite flavorful, but the alcohol hits a bit hard here for a standard proof tequila. The medium length finish includes vanilla, milk chocolate, and agave. I quite liked this tequila and time in glass reveals more of its charms. If the alcohol were a bit better integrated, things would be even better, but this is a great reposado at a good price that demonstrates excellent balance between the influence of the agave and the wood.

80 proof. NOM 1467
