Review: 2020 San Felice Chianti Classico

We’ve profiled numerous bottles from Italy’s San Felice in the spring and summer of 2022, mainly on the label’s higher-end price range. Today, we look deeper into one of the label’s more affordable offerings: the 2020 Chianti Classico.

It’s easygoing but hearty, with gentle notes of violet and peak-season raspberry on the nose. There’s a faint trace of eucalyptus with time in the glass, giving some separation and a bit of intrigue to the initial fruit-forward notes. The palate keeps matters nicely engaged, as the raspberry from the nose meets with notes of star anise, clove, and milk chocolate, which hang around for a rather lengthy finish. The bright acidity helps to keep things from getting too out of hand.

This well-structured Chianti is ready to go now. However, putting this away for 12-18 may prove to be a worthy investment of time. Heck, at $20, it may be worth treating yourself to two bottles: one for now, and one for later. You’re worth it.
