Review: The Beverly High Rye

A shiny new whiskey recently hit the glitzy streets of Rodeo Drive. Available initially in the greater Los Angeles area, The Beverly High Rye will also be launching in New York (and nationally via Reservebar). Here are the deets for this new bar cart bling:

Founded by Andrew Borenzweig, a Los Angeles entrepreneur and whiskey enthusiast, The Beverly High Rye is the ultimate whiskey of today, drawing its inspiration from Beverly Hills and Californian high living to evoke American luxury in name and spirit.

Andrew partnered with Cedar Ridge Distillery to bring the whiskey to life. Cedar Ridge’s legacy, passion, and commitment to quality are evident in every drop of this authentic whiskey. This majority-rye recipe is an artisanal harmony of Straight Rye and Straight Bourbon Whiskeys, harnessing the trademark qualities in each to achieve a uniquely fine American whiskey. Its profile is bold in flavor and rich in feel — a union of spicy and sweet. Hand selected barrels from Cedar Ridge are the heart of this blend, complemented by a curated selection from Indiana.

So, there you have it. But what exactly does Californian “high living” taste like? Let’s find out.

On the nose, The Beverly High Rye is fragrant and expressive with a big herbal rye character that initially stands out as quite green and minty before subsiding somewhat with time in glass. Things come across as a little youthful with glimmers of raw wood and fresh corn notes, but a nice layer of butterscotch and soft baking spice helps polish those edges. The palate is quite sweet, medium-bodied, and approachable with a mild, even warmth and well-balanced oak profile. Notes of caramel candies and vanilla bean ice cream offer a pleasant, if straightforward, sip. The midpalate sees a flourish of rye spice that shakes things up a bit heading into a medium-length finish accented with cinnamon sugar and lemon candies. A touch sugary, but as bourbon/rye blends go, it’s well-executed, amplifying some the best of both styles.
