Review: Amara Amaro D’Arancia Rossa

This Sicilian amaro is distinctly unique, thanks to blood orange peel being one of its primary ingredients. A pale orange in color, there’s quite a medicinal aroma here that immediately evokes the orange-flavored cough syrup we used to choke down as kids. (Delsym seems to be the modern equivalent.)

It’s a tough thing to get past, but if you can, you’ll find a pretty floral element present on the nose alongside your medicine. The palate is quite similar, semi-sweet orange completely dominating, with restrained notes of milk chocolate, flowers, and a spray of (very) lightly bitter herbs taking things into more familiar amaro territory on the finish. This is a bit much to drink on its own — but in lieu of triple sec or another orange liqueur in a cocktail, it offers a slight but noticeable spin on the familiar.

60 proof.
