Review: Prospero Tequila – Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo
Made by Master Distiller Stella Anguiano and fronted by pop star Rita Ora, Próspero Tequila first became available in 2019. Female distillers, particularly of tequila, are rare, but Stella Anguiano has paid her dues. She has been making tequila for over 30 years, including working at the Orendain family distillery for 20 years. Próspero tequila is made with 100% blue agave from the Lowlands region of Jalisco, Mexico, and the standard three expressions are on tap. Let’s give them a try.
All three are 80 proof. NOM 1437.
Próspero Tequila Blanco – The nose is big and bold, introducing strong, flowery perfume notes and bubble gum. With a little time, some light herbal agave notes can also be discerned. The palate is similar, starting with an overly sweet, floral note, followed by pepper and a surprisingly strong alcohol burn for an 80 proof product. The finish is bubble gum alongside a medicinal astringency. The agave note that could be found in the nose is entirely hidden on the palate. This is a tequila for mixing that may appeal to people that don’t typically like tequila, but it wasn’t a hit for me. C- / $38
Próspero Tequila Reposado – Aged for a minimum of 6 months, this tequila pours pale honey in color. The nose includes the flowery character found in the blanco, but not so pronounced, appearing here balanced by some welcome vanilla. Again, agave notes can be found, but you have to search for them. The palate is muddled. Sweet flowery notes come first, followed by light agave and stronger vanilla. Then the palate changes to bubble gum, and the medicinal quality found in the blanco reappears for an unpleasant, finishing burn. This is better tequila than the blanco, but only a little. C / $43
Próspero Tequila Añejo – Light gold in color, the añejo is aged for a minimum of 12 months. The nose is much more restrained than in the other two expressions, which is a good thing in this instance. Gentle vanilla appears most prominently along with a touch of cocoa and a bit of alcohol. Once again, agave notes are well hidden but can be found by the diligent searcher. The palate shows vanilla extract, followed by pepper, an alcohol burn, and light floral sweetness. The finish returns to lightly sweet vanilla and that lingering medicinal note. As with all of the Prospero lineup, I was not a fan of this tequila. It isn’t as cloyingly sweet as the blanco and the reposado, but the agave notes are concealed and the wood didn’t impart enough character to develop enjoyable añejo flavors. C / $48
