Can tolerance be spirit specific?

Everything I see online basically just says one drink with 40% should have the same effect on me as another. Hear me out though, my go to is rum (arr matey) I can drink a lot of rum on a night out and I’ll be very merry but I’d able tell my tits from my arse hole. Give me the same amount of whiskey and I’d probably try to make love with a radiator and wake up in a tree somewhere wearing someone else’s wedding dress (I’m a dude) is there a scientific explanation for this? Can you really build a tolerance to a specific alcohol? Also merry Christmas.
