Review: Traverse City Whiskey Lakeside Peach

Michigan’s Traverse City makes a wide range of whiskeys which we’ve covered in depth in the past. Now there’s a limited edition offering on the table: Traverse City’s bourbon infused with Michigan peaches (and natural flavor, natch). Let’s put it through its paces.

The big question with a product like this isn’t whether it smells and tastes like peaches, but how much it smells and tastes like peaches. The answer is a lot, but it’s all sweet peach candy, which is fairly par for fruit-flavored whiskey. Here it’s rather overpowering, excluding almost everything else from the glass, save for a slightly leathery, earthy note that’s evident only if you breathe deep. Plenty more peach candy arrives on first sip, punctuated by a petrol character that can be a touch off-putting, and which grows in power over time. Fortunately, there’s plenty of peachy-sugary syrup to temper the fuel depot notes, though that leaves the finish feeling more than a little rough and medicinal. Compare and contrast to Traverse City’s American Cherry edition.

70 proof.
