Review: Hercules Mulligan Rum & Rye

Hercules Mulligan is a minor figure in American history — and a somewhat larger figure in the musical Hamilton — and now the old Mulligan has a ready-to-drink cocktail named in his honor. It’s a complicated blend of three aged rums, three rye whiskeys, bitters, and fresh ginger — plus a splash of simple syrup. The bottle may look like a whiskey — and at 43% abv, it may as well be — but what’s inside the bottle is definitely something else. Let’s give it a whirl.

Fans of Old Fashioneds — and other booze-forward cocktails — will find plenty to enjoy here. Heady and aggressive, it’s a bit heavier on rum than it is rye, though the inclusion of simple syrup in the mix brings out those molasses-based notes more clearly. Light notes of cherry and milk chocolate are readily evident, but aside from those elements, ginger is the major element of note that works its way into the experience, and it works well here, adding a pinch of spice to what would otherwise be a very straightforward experience. Lingering chocolate on the finish — and ample sugar, to boot.

Not overwhelmingly complex but oh so easy to drink. Be careful, and consider the alcohol level.

86 proof.
