Review: Wines of Dutton Estate, Late 2022 Releases

Dutton Estate‘s summer wine releases have arrived. Today we look at a quartet of offerings from this Sonoma-based pinot specialist.

2020 Dutton Estate Chardonnay Kyndall’s Reserve – No shortage of oak here, this aggressive chardonnay is punchy with vanilla, brown butter, and toasty lumberyard elements. Almost chewy in texture, with elements of coconut, white flowers, and gooseberry all present. Smoldering, almost smoky, oak on the finish, with the fruit muddled in. B / $44

2021 Dutton Estate Pinot Noir Karmen Isabella – It feels a bit young at the moment, but this pinot is bursting with notes of strawberry, chocolate, and a touch of syrupy figs. I think a few years in cellar will help to temper this wine appropriately, but for a bolder, fruit-forward experience, you could do a lot worse. B+ / $49

2019 Dutton Estate Pinot Noir Thomas Road Vineyard – You can immediately see the difference a couple of years of bottle time does for this wine, which is richer and immersive, its notes of black cherry and baking spice creating a dazzling diorama of flavors, culminating in a finish that evokes Mexican chocolate, bright plums, and a touch of raisin on the very end. A clear favorite in this lineup and a must-buy. A / $70

2019 Dutton Estate Pinot Noir La Familia – One of Dutton’s top bottlings, La Familia presents a rich and enveloping pinot that is lush with notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, and red cherry notes smoldering underneath. Opulent in body, the wine develops in layers, initially showing some of its sweeter side before finding elements of clove, anise, and eucalyptus. The finish feels particularly mint-forward, though just a bit tannic, with lingering spice notes on the finish. A / $72
