Review: Louis Jadot 2019 Pinot Noir and 2020 Macon-Villages
Louis Jadot makes some reasonably high-end Burgundy wines, but it is best known for extremely approachable bottlings like these — so affordable they often have the grape varietal on the label — chardonnay, pinot noir, etc., a real rarity in France.
Today we look at a pair of entry-level Jadots, a white and a red. Thoughts follow.
2019 Louis Jadot Pinot Noir Bourgogne – Red Burgundy is pinot noir, of course, and with this bottle, there’s no confusion over that fact. This may be a (very) cheap wine but it’s actually perfectly agreeable on the whole, a solid mix of cranberry and cherry, somewhat tart with an appropriately Burgundian earthiness underneath. The palate’s a bit thin, and it has a short finish with a bit too much of an herbal edge on the back end, but at this price level, no one is expecting a transformative experience. B+ / $15
2020 Louis Jadot Macon-Villages Chardonnay – Clean and crisp and uncomplicated, this mineral-heavy expression of chardonnay offers mild notes of lemon and green apple, followed by just a dusting of sesame and light coconut notes, giving the finish a gentle creaminess. Refreshing, versatile, and insanely affordable, this is an easy best value pick to grab by the case. A- / $12
