Review: Dutcher Crossing 2019 Bacigalupi Chardonnay and 2018 Brothers’ Reserve Zinfandel

Another pair of wines from our friends at Dutcher Crossing, who’ve been on a tear lately.

2019 Dutcher Crossing Chardonnay Bacigalupi Vineyard – Bold and aggressively oaked, this classic California chardonnay is long on vanilla and extracted oak notes, becoming slightly green as it develops in the glass. A healthy squeeze of lemon brightens up the waxy, doughy quality in the wine, but the finish of gooseberry and coconut husk feels a bit over the top. Oak dust lingers on the tongue forever. B- / $44

2018 Dutcher Crossing Zinfandel Brothers’ Reserve Dry Creek Valley – A surprising zin, herbal and a touch green, then moving into a more traditional note of extracted black fruit, with elements of fig and raisin. A bold rosemary note clings to the finish. Intriguing and unexpected, with a bit of a boozy edge to it. B+ / $41
