Review: Sapporo Premium Non-Alcoholic Beer

Also known as Sapporo 0.0%, Sapporo Premium Non-Alcoholic is the N/A version of the Japanese classic, more or less anyway. Unlike a lot of non-alc beers, it doesn’t particularly taste like classic Sapporo, attacking with a very lemon-forward quality that threatens to overwhelm everything before it ever gets going. A spritz of apple cider adds a sweeter fruit element, helping to calm things down at least a little. As the palate develops the beer takes on a distinct maltiness, tempering the earlier fruit notes. Some brown sugar lingers underneath all the grainy notes until a reprise of that zippy lemon returns in time for the finish. It’s certainly a pleasant enough brew, though it feels like the point of all that bright acidity is to cover up the lack of alcohol. Weirdly enough, it works.

B+ / $11 per six-pack
