Review: Aspen Vodka

Three guesses where Aspen Vodka hails from!

Vodka is synonymous with apres ski activities, and true to form, Aspen Distillers makes only one product, a vodka made from non-GMO Colorado wheat and proofed with water from the local Roaring Fork River. Aspen’s facility is one of the few carbon-negative distilleries in the world and is the only North American distillery to receive LEED Platinum v4 certification.

With that, let’s pour a shot and celebrate the arrival of cooler weather.

Aspen Vodka Review

The nose is indistinct, a little grainy, a little muddy, but nothing you can put your finger on. As it gets some air, notes of roasted nuts and dried banana become more prominent, before a layer of earthy forest floor comes into focus, all but taking over.

The palate tells much the same story, but in reverse: First quite dusty and earthy, it blossoms on the tongue to showcase a buttery character, with dusky spices evolving as it sits in the mouth. Light florals, dried like potpourri, along with a wafting incense character, give the finish a heady, Eastern quality — but only slightly. Ultimately, the cereal-heavy elements visible on the initial nosing of the vodka return, leaving the experience slightly doughy.

80 proof.
