Review: Johnnie Walker Blue Label Festive Blend
It’s been two years since we last reviewed a Blue Label special edition, having greatly enjoyed the Ice Chalet offering from 2024. This year, Johnnie Walker has dropped something entirely new, officially known on the label as “Festive Blend” but unofficially as “Indian Festive Blend.”
The festival in question is ostensibly Diwali, the late fall festival of lights celebrated in Hindu culture. Johnnie Walker master blender Dr. Emma Walker chose tasks that resonated with this event: “I was captivated by the artistry of Indian cuisine, the way chefs balance bold spice with harmony, elegance and depth,” she says. “That sense of balance became my inspiration for this special Blue Label blend. By layering aromatic notes of cardamom, clove and cinnamon with smooth sweetness and our signature depth of flavor, we’ve created a whisky that complements the richness of India’s festive table while remaining unmistakably Johnnie Walker Blue Label.”
The bottle was designed in collaboration with Indian couturier Rahul Mishra, who worked with Johnnie Walker on another Indian-themed release in 2025 for Paris Fashion Week.
We were fortunate to receive a bottle for review. Our thoughts follow.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Festive Blend Review
Just nosing this whisky reveals what an all-star Emma Walker is at cask selection, particularly given she has about 10 million of them to work with at any one time. The nose here truly evokes an Indian celebration, with cardamom and cinnamon immediately present. It’s quite heady, with a brown butter sensibility that tempers any risk of the spice notes running away from you, developing into a deeper and more soulful aroma that releases notes of gently tanned leather and graphite, as the spice turns more toward clove. Some chocolate notes, bittersweet to dark, come along soon enough.
The palate is an utter delight. Lightly sweet with honey and more of a milk chocolate note, it’s a perfect foil to the increasingly aromatic nose, which could threaten to overwhelm if not for the subduing qualities that are part and parcel of the palate. Notes of chocolate-covered orange, graham crackers, and orange blossom honey all sweeten up the experience, though those intensely spicy elements evident on the nose remain well-integrated in the body. The finish sees some lingering cereal notes, offering a breakfasty conclusion to the ride, though maybe just a little too grain-forward given what’s come before.
This is one of those whiskies that is difficult to put down once you pop the cork, its enchanting depth of flavor pulling you in on the nose, then holding fast on the tongue. Whether you’re celebrating Diwali or not — or even know what it is — it’s an absolute star, unique without being bizarre, engaging through and through.
