Malibu or rum

Ok so im turning legal age to drink in a month and im trying to plan a party for me and my friends. Im looking at what alcohol to buy and I want rum. There’s the malibu coconut rum which looks cool and stuff but should I just get regular rum? I see more drinks being made using normal rum but also I can make fun stuff out of the malibu and I just want opinions on which is better and maybe some drink ideas I could make
