Review: High West Bourbon

High West makes a bevy of luxe whiskeys, such as Bourye, The Prisoner’s Share, and A Midwinter Night’s Dram, but it’s also been expanding its presence on lower shelves, the most basic of the bunch being this otherwise unadorned bourbon, the simplest and least expensive bottle in its arsenal.

Some of the contents are disclosed, some arent. What we do know is that it’s a blend of mashbills from various locations, including a 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley offering from MGP; an 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% malted barley bourbon from parts unknown, and “other whiskey components undisclosed due to contractual reasons.”

None of this carries an age statement.

We got a bottle. Let’s check it out.

High West Bourbon Review

The immediate rush of peanut and popcorn should come as no big surprise; this is clearly young stuff that feels like walking into a Cracker Jack factory. Simplistic and a little leathery, the whiskey never finds much more to grab on to beyond this basic introduction.

The palate isn’t much more expressive, heavy on peanut and actually a little bitter, with slightly musty overtones reminscent of old books and roast beef. Time in glass fortunately helps some of the more rustic elements to blow off, ultimately revealing a sharp but moderated citrus note perking up on the finish. Largely anonymous, but at least it’s affordable.

90 proof. Reviewed: Batch#24C13.
